USING THE POWER OF ART TO OWN OUR STORIES
Many of us struggle with a particular story in our lives. Maybe it is a tale of hurt, transition, shifting to new roles, loss, or recovery. Perhaps you are in a place now of trying to understand your story. When we truly come to terms with and own our stories, we are able to unburden ourselves from the pain the stories carry. By visiting the past, we have the opportunity to start the next chapter with fresh perspective in our present and future.
Join Heather McPaul for a particularly unique and therapeutic way of diving into your story through the creation of an Altered Book.
An altered book is a form of mixed media artwork that changes a book from its original form into a different form, altering its appearance and/or meaning. In essence, you will write your story by altering an actual book using mixed media artwork to reflect the various emotions, sequences, internal and external relationships involved. There is no artistic talent or background required! Seriously!
Some examples of stories people have worked on through Altered Books:
The story of your relationship with a parent. The story of a relationship ending. The story of being bullied as a child. The story of becoming an adult. The story of becoming a parent. The story of being hurt, neglected, or abused in childhood. The story of finding yourself. The story of recovery. The story of chronic pain or illness.
Altered books may be as simple as adding a drawing or text to a page, or as complex as creating an intricate book sculpture. Use any and all media to reach your vision.

It’s time to dust off your altered book and return to the story. There is still so much to learn about who you are. Dive deeper into your story by continuing to create new pages with mixed media. Expand your perception, build on your awareness and connect with yourself in profound ways. Master your emotions and finish the end of your book.
